Instructions

    • 1

Set aside a corner of your home where you can create a pretend play area for your child. Stock the area with child-size versions of the adult world. Include items such as table and chairs, dolls, toy cars, toy trains, kitchen sets and phones.

    • 2

Collect empty food tins, cereal boxes and cartons. Clean them out after use and then place them in a basket for your child to use during pretend play.

    • 3

Maintain a box full of old clothes and hats that can be used for dress-up.

    • 4

Encourage your toddler to think outside of the box by using common objects to represent real life things. Use paper plates to represent lily pads for frogs. Tap plastic cups together to make the sound of horse feet. Turn a paper towel roll into a telescope.

    • 5

Integrate music into your child's imaginary activity. Show your child how to play air guitar and hold a little concert.

    • 6

Get on your hands and knees and play with your toddler. Kids like to imagine independently, but they love to share their creativity with adults.

    • 7

Role-play scenarios with dolls and animals. Make up stories with your child.

Tips & Warnings

  • Watch your child after school or day care. Many children will use their toys to review relevant events from their day.

  • Don't gender stereotype play. Girls should be encouraged to play train or cars, while boys should have a chance to cook in the kitchen.
