Papasan chairs, also known as satellite chairs, are a comfortable addition to any décor. But it's common that the cushion will wear out long before the frame. But you can easily sew a new cushion using items you probably already have lying around the house. Read on to learn how to sew a papasan chair cushion.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Papasan chair frame
  • At least five pillows
  • Fabric

Step1
Gather old pillows. You'll need at least five pillows to complete this project. Wash them and cut them diagonally to form wedges.
Step2
Arrange pillows in your papasan chair frame to make a circle. Cut your pillows so that there's no overlapping where the papasan cushion would feel lumpy.
Step3
Wash the fabric you want to use as the papasan chair cushion cover. It's important you do this before you sew the cover in place, because the cushion will not be removable.
Step4
Cut two pieces of cloth to serve as the cushion cover. To do this, lay your pillows out on the floor in the arrangement appropriate for the cushion. Cut your fabric around these pillows. Allow extra room on the sides so you have enough room to sew a proper seam. Your edges will be smoother if you take extra precautions to make sure you have perfect circles.
Step5
Sew the two large pieces of fabric together, without the pillows in them. To avoid an unsightly seam, you can turn the cushion inside out and you'll have a smooth edge. Leave about two feet open so you can stuff the cushion with your pillows.
Step6
Add buttons to the cushion. There should be one button about every 12 inches. This helps prevent your papasan chair cushion cover from tearing. For best results, run the stitches between each pillow wedge. And it should run completely through the cushion.
Step7
Close the opening in the cushion by hand. You'll sew this just like you would any other pillow that required stuffing.
Step8
Consider making a slip cover by slightly modifying these directions. A slip cover can easily be removed and washed.
