When you have children, you spend a lot of time and energy making your home a safe place for them to live. You buy the right crib, cover all of the outlets, attach bookcases to the walls and get rid of the strings on your window treatments. What people often don't pay enough attention to is the kitchen and appliances that definitely need to be childproofed. Read on to learn how to childproof appliances.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pay attention to small appliances. Appliances that are used on your counter-tops, such as toasters, coffee makers and griddles should be kept out of the reach of small children at all times. When they're in use, place them toward the back of your counter, and when not in use, put them away.

  2. Step 2

Put it on the back burner. When you're making a meal on the stove, use the back burners so that little fingers don't get burned if they happen to reach up. If you have to use the front burners, make sure that you turn the handles of pots and pans toward the back of the stove.

  3. Step 3

Make sure that the dishwasher door is closed. At times when you're not using your dishwasher, close and lock the door anyway. Little ones can grab sharp, pointy utensils or put dishwasher detergent into their mouths.

  4. Step 4

Guard against fires. In the case of kitchen fires and to keep your children safe, store a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, either under a cabinet or in a pantry. This provides quick and easy access if something alights when cooking.

  5. Step 5

Put a latch on it. Equip your oven, refrigerator and microwave so that children can't open and close the doors on their own. This will prevent burns, accidental ingestion and pinching of tiny fingers.

  6. Step 6

Invest in knob covers. You'll want to find knob covers for your stove and oven so that children can't turn them on by themselves. If you can, remove the knobs when you're not cooking.

  7. Step 7

Remember the kitchen sink. Your sink can be considered an appliance, too. Install an anti-scale device on your faucet and a cover over your garbage disposal.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bathroom appliances such as hair dryers and curling irons should always be kept out of the reach of children.
  • Never allow your children to sit on your kitchen counters.
