How to Tell a Good Joke

1. Be confident. Believe that your joke is funny, and others will follow suit. If you deliver a joke with confidence, then others will assume it's funny without even considering the joke much.

2. Consider your audience. Don't tell a dirty or racy joke at a church party. Don't tell a blonde joke to a blonde. Don't tell a man joke to a group of men. Telling a joke that offends someone does not only not get laughs, it probably prevents those people from ever laughing with you again.

3. Keep it short. Stick to the facts required to get the point of the joke across only. Most people have relatively short attention spans, and rattling on and on does not build up to a climax. It bores the listeners.

4. Remember the joke and know it well. Nothing is less funny than listening to a half joke and then hearing "Oh wait, that's not right."

5. Know when enough is enough. If the joke gets a lot of laughs, it probably won't the second time. Don't repeat the same joke to the same audience hoping to get the same reaction. Also, don't repeat the punch line over and over trying to extend the laughs.

6. Don't giggle throughout the joke. If you laugh at your own joke before it's out, it raises expectations too high, and the listener will probably be disappointed.
