Step 1
Know that the Red Cross truly appreciates the giving spirit that is behind every donation, but they are very limited to the type of donations that they're able to accept, including food from an organized food drive.
-
Step 2
Understand that the Red Cross is unable to accept any type of food donations from people or other groups. Unfortunately they do not have the resources or facilities available to house large donations of food, nor can they truck the food from where it may be housed to an emergency site.
-
Step 3
Give to local charities and work with them to organize a food drive to benefit them. A giving spirit should never be squelched, and a food drive is an excellent way to help out those in need. The Red Cross recommends going through a local charity to organize one.
-
Step 4
Help if you have a tie with a food distributor that can provide large quantities of new food that are needed during a disaster. Anheuser-Busch canned water rather than beer and gave mass quantities to the Red Cross for a recent disaster. This is the type of help that the Red Cross will accept, rather than an organized food drive.
-
Step 5
Contact your local Red Cross chapter or visit the Red Cross website for more information on how to donate through a company.
-
Step 6
Organize a monetary drive in lieu of a food drive to benefit the Red Cross. The Red Cross encourages monetary donations during disasters and at any time throughout the year.
