How to Organize Knitting Needles

Every crafter faces the timeless problem of where to keep all their craft supplies. Knitting is no different. Knitters tend to have straights, circulars, and double points, all of various lengths and sizes. Keeping your needles nicely organized allows you to start a new project right away without searching for needles.

Gather all your needles together. You know the drill. You have to search through the craft room, check for needles mixed in with sewing supplies, dig under the couch cushions for those lost double points, and go through all your travel knitting bags to get any needles not currently in use for a project.

    • 2

Find a two-ring-binder that is at least two inches thick, and preferably one that can zip up all the way around. This will be very helpful in keeping your supplies together, and it can be stored on a bookshelf with all your knitting books and patterns.

    • 3

Buy some quart and gallon zipper top bags. Look for ones designed for crafts. They are a little thicker and less flexible than food bags. Your goal is to have most bags at least eight to nine inches tall and some that are twelve to thirteen inches tall (or whatever size will fit inside your notebook and still hold your longest straight needles).

    • 4

Decide how you want to organize these. Is it enough to put them in size category, or do you want separate sections for circulars, double points, and straights? If you want separate sections, get 3 dividers and label them with each needle type. If you just want them sorted by size, you can use dividers here as well. Put the size number on each tab and place them in the notebook.

Measure your needles using a needle gauge, and sort them by size. Put all your 1s, 2s and 3s in separate zipper top bags, and use a permanent marker to label the bag with the appropriate size. If sorting by type, make a separate bag for each type of needle you have in that size.

Punch holes in the sides of the bags with a three-hole punch. Then you can simply insert your bags into the notebook and zip it up for storage. Whenever you get new needles, just add them to the system with a new bag or in an existing bag as necessary.
