Most toddlers have an abundance of toys, both new and old. It is important for parents to check the toys regularly to make sure the items are safe for the toddler. The general guidelines below will help keep toddlers safe and happy with their toys.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check toys regularly for sharp edges or broken pieces. Children could swallow and choke on the small pieces that break off from the larger toy. If a toy breaks, the broken edge could be sharp and dangerous to a toddler. Remove all broken toys from the toddler's toy box as soon as possible.

  2. Step 2

Examine wooden toys very carefully. Wood tends to splinter, posing a choking hazard to a toddler if they chew on the toy. Toddlers could also get a splinter lodged under their skin.

  3. Step 3

Beware of stuffed toys. Some cheaply constructed toys tend to come apart. The fuzz, as well as buttons and eyes, could be easily removed by the toddler. Toddlers could inhale and choke on the buttons and fuzz.

  4. Step 4

Monitor the newspaper and television for notices of toy recalls. Recalled toys have been found to be dangerous, so children should immediately stop playing with the toy. If any recalled toddler toys are in your possession, return them to the store where they were purchased or dispose of them in the garbage. Also check the recall lists for toys made with lead-based paint. Contrary to popular belief, toys from any country, even the USA, can contain high levels of lead. Continue to monitor the recall lists for lead content recalls or general toy recalls.

  5. Step 5

Observe the toddler while they are playing with the toy. Ensure they play with the toy appropriately.

  6. Step 6

Refer to the packaging to find the toy's recommended age guidelines. The guidelines are there to help a parent make sure the toy is not too advanced or unsafe for the toddler's current age.
