Indoor vegetable gardening is a favorite hobby for many people who like to eat fresh vegetables all year long. You don't need a lot of room to grow your vegetables, especially if you're tight on space. Grow your vegetable in containers, pots or hanging baskets near your windowsills for sunlight.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Suitable container and pots
  • Vegetable seeds or plants
  • Potting soil
  • Fertilizer as needed
  • Gloves (optional)

Place to Grow your Vegetables

Step1
Determine where in your house you want to grow your indoor vegetables.
Step2
Have enough space for your indoor garden, near a window with sunlight most of the day.
Step3
Place hanging pots outside your patio or from a sunny window. There's always space to grow plants and vegetables just about anywhere.

Containers

Step1
Select containers for your indoor vegetable garden. Use containers or hanging baskets that have appropriate drainage. You can choose the size, shape and cost to fit your needs.
Step2
Use containers or hanging baskets that have holes in the bottom.
Step3
Buy deep containers for vine crops, such as squash, pumpkins, and cucumbers, as long as you have proper staking available.

Planting vegetables

Step1
Purchase a lightweight potting mix from a garden supply center or nursery.
Step2
Get your containers ready for planting. Make sure you have adequate drainage. Put small stones in the dish. Place the pot on top of the dish.
Step3
Add soil to your containers with a little bit of water. Leave enough space between the top of the container and the soil for watering.
Step4
Plant the seeds according to the directions on the envelopes, covering with a thin layer of soil.

Care of vegetables

Step1
Examine seeds daily.
Step2
Water them when they are dry and fertilize on a regular basis. Fertilizer helps replenish the nutrients that are washed away every time you water them
Step3
Ensure that the plants get sunlight daily.

Tips & Warnings

  • Share the fun and help a friend get started in indoor vegetable gardening.
  • Plan to pot a few extras of vegetables so your friends and family can enjoy them.
  • Get your children involved in indoor gardening. Even children who don't like vegetables, might enjoy carrots they grow themselves.
  • Research before you start your garden and plan what vegetables you want to grow.
  • Put a layer of peat moss on top of the soil in each container to help retain moisture.
  • Only plant what vegetables you want to eat, give to friends, family or neighbors.
  • The deeper the pot, the less watering it will need.
  • Avoid over watering. Excess water can gather at the base of the container, and cause the rots of your plant to rot.
