How to Crochet a Play Gauntlet

Children love to pretend play and their roles are usually the heroes. Coming back from a Renaissance Fair can leave them wanting for some dress up clothing to go with their imagination. This gauntlet is easy and works up quickly and can be adjusted to fit almost anyone. This also makes a great addition to a knight's Halloween costume.

Things You'll Need

  • Metallic crochet thread - any color
  • Crochet Hook - size to make desired gauge - a size B works great
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon or baby elastic - measured to fit the upper forearm

Instructions

    • 1

Loop your thread on your hook and Ch approximately eighteen to twenty (18-20) Ch's. Connect to the first Sc to make a "loop", fit loosely around the child's middle finger (you'll need your child to hang around for the fitting).

    • 2

Begin this row by stitching a Ch four (4), (from now on, counts as first Dc and Ch one (1)); Dc, then Ch one (1) two times in the next two (2) Sc, Dc in last Sc; this should total a four (4) Dc row.

    • 3

Begin this row by stitching a Ch three (3), turn, Dc in each Dc.

    • 4

Begin this row by stitching a Ch four (4) (counts as first Dc and Ch one (1)), turn, Dc in first Ch between Dc one (1) and Dc three (3); Ch one (1) and Dc for next two (2)Dc, Dc between last Ch one (1) and last Dc. This adds an extra Dc to each end.

    • 5

Begin this row by stitching a Ch three (3), then turn, Dc in each Dc.

    • 6

Begin these rows by stitching a Ch four (4), then turn, continue this stitch pattern, repeating across, adding one (1) Dc on each end. Making every other row a "normal" row (no increase in Dc). Adding one (1) Dc on each end until you reach approximately four (4) inches or the length from the middle finger to the wrist bone. You should have approximately twelve (12) to fourteen (14) Dcs in the last row. This will create a triangle shape coming from the ring that is about four (4) inches long and when the ring is placed on the middle finger, the rest should lay over the child's hand to the wrist bone.

    • 7

Begin this row by stitching a Ch one (1), then turn, Sc across the whole row. Next, make the ring that surrounds the wrist. This can be calculated using a gauge of five (5) Sc per inch. Use either your calculations or approximately twenty (20) to thirty (30) Chs. Attach to opposite side to form circle around wrist. Adjust number of stitches, try on for fit, adjust as necessary. The child should be able to slip the larger loop snuggly over hand.

    • 8

Begin this row by stitching a Ch four (4), Dc/Ch one (1) in every other Ch across to the last stitch; connect to the three (3) Ch.

    • 9

Begin these rows by stitching a Ch four (4), Dc/Ch one (1) in every other Dc; continue these rows for approximately two (2) inches.

    • 10

Begin these rows by stitching a Ch four (4), Dc/Ch one (1) increase by two (2) Dc. Crochet these rows for approximately two (2) inches.

    • 11

Begin these rows by stitching a Ch four (4), Dc/Ch one (1) increase by four (4) Dc, Crochet these rows for approximately two (2) inches (should be about six inches in length total). Knot and cut thread.

    • 12

Weave ribbon or baby elastic in last row for better fit. This can be tied or drawn to keep from sliding down.
