How to Build Snowboard Moguls

Learning to snowboard downhill is tough for any beginner, but once you get the hang of it, trying to snowboard over moguls may seem really intimidating. After all, it does take its toll on your knees. Try to build some snowboard moguls at home where you can practice safely and be ready the next time you hit the big slopes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Find an area with a natural hill. Flat land will not work because you need the speed gravity provides to propel the snowboard over the moguls. It doesn't have to be a long hill, but the bigger it is, the better speed you will get.
Step2
Make sure there is plenty of snow. The hill will need to be covered in enough snow to board down, but additional snow is needed to build up the bumps. It may be best to wait until right after a large snowfall to build some moguls.
Step3
Choose to ski or snowboard down the hill over and over. Yes, over and over, then over again. This is how most natural moguls are formed, by skiers and boarders following the same path and turning to create the snow to form bumps. This option isn't much fun when you have to hike it up the hill again on foot to continually build your moguls, but it works.
Step4
Go down the hill a few times instead and try to set the natural pattern for the hill and where natural moguls might form. This will essentially give you a pattern to follow for where to place the moguls and how far apart they should be.
Step5
Start at the top of the hill and use your hands to move snow and build it into a small pile. Continue to pile more snow on top, compacting it as much as possible. Take a small spray bottle of water with you to mist the snow so it packs down more firmly.
Step6
Move to another area and build the next mogul following the same process. Continue down the hill, making at least three moguls across and as many as you would like down. Remember to continue to follow the natural pattern set out when you went down the clean hill.
