For an unusual decorating idea, decorate your child's room or your own room with a birth month theme. Nothing is more personal than using the colors and flowers of the month you were born to decorate your room. The colors of birth month flowers and birthstones make interesting combinations, and the theme is subtle yet special.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Find out what the birthstone and birth month flower are. Surf the web with the search terms "birth month flower" and "birthstones." Find sites that include pictures of the flowers and stones. Print the pictures.
Step2
Get paint swatches that match the colors of the flowers and stones. Use the paint swatches and your printed pictures as a palette for the colors of the room.
Step3
Search local stores and Internet retailers for bedding and curtains that match your palette. Most birthstones are named for their color -- for example, ruby, amethyst, and garnet -- so you should find choices easily. You can also search for items that are the color of the birth flower or that features the flower in embroidery or fabric. Find a few choices for each item. Print out pictures of them.
Step4
Browse online art stores for posters and prints that feature the birth month flower or a scene reminiscent of the birth month. A poster representing the first day of spring for someone born on that day, or a print with a bouquet of larkspurs next to an American flag for a July child are some ideas. Choose prints that will be enjoyable for years to come. Bookmark the choices that appeal to you. Print them out or save the images to your computer.
Step5
Look for accessories and additional items online. Use the birthstone and flower names in your search. Items include lamps, decorative pillows, and keepsake items such as china dolls or jewelry boxes that feature the birthstone.
Step6
Get all your swatches, pictures and computer images together. Put them next to each other to see what works together. If the room is a child's room, let the child review the images and choose what he likes. Purchase the items.
Step7
Paint the walls the color of the birthstone or flower, or paint one accent wall, or simply keep the walls a neutral color. Add a wallpaper border that features the birth month flower if you'd like. Add the bedding, curtains and accessories.
