Kindergarteners strive on repetition. Homework sent home with kindergarteners should reflect lessons learned in the classroom. The easiest way of assigning homework is by making up homework packets. These packets should cover a variety of subjects and include different ways of learning. With parental involvement, homework packets should take no more than an hour when done a little each day.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick the day you'll send homework packets home with the students. Some teachers prefer sending them home on Monday and collecting them on Friday. Other teachers prefer both sending and collecting them on Friday.

  2. Step 2

Write an instruction sheet for each packet informing the parents of what is expected. Include any special instructions or changes on the instruction sheet.

  3. Step 3

Include worksheets that review lessons taught during the week. Basic skills worksheets include letters, numbers, shapes, and colors.

  4. Step 4

Mix up the type of homework included in the packet. Kindergarten homework can consist of coloring, drawing, tracing, cut and paste and reading.

  5. Step 5

Add a reading log in the homework packet. Instruct parents that they should read a book to their child and record their child's thoughts about the book in the log. Kindergarten book reports are best assigned by having the student draw their favorite scene from the book; include a blank page in the packet for drawing.

  6. Step 6

Print out copies of kindergarten sight words and include them in the homework packet. Let parents tear these out for keeping at home so the child can review them at home.

Tips & Warnings
  • Customize homework packets based on student skill level. Add a more challenging worksheet or extra review practice for students needing it.
