Whether you're an experienced tattoo artist or you're new to the trade, your tattoo machine is one of the most important pieces of equipment you will purchase. There are subtle differences between a tattoo liner and shader, so if your intention is to purchase a machine specifically geared towards lining, be sure you know what you're buying.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Compare size and variety. A tattoo liner will be used to outline each tattoo and should be equipped with the right size coils to be powerful enough to perform this task without being so powerful as to hamper the tattoo artist. Liners tend to have smaller coils and are built in a more upright position.
Step2
Be sure the tattoo machine is set up for lining. Unless you're buying an all-around machine that can be used for both shading and lining, check that the machine you're buying is ready to be used as a liner only. The machine should be able to do any line work and possibly small details during the tattoo process.
Step3
Determine what kind of material you want. The metal used for a tattoo liner should be of high quality like cooper, iron or brass. Liners made of weaker metals have a tendency to break during tattooing. If you don't have a backup machine, then business is done for the day.
Step4
Talk to other tattoo artists. Although each artist will have their own preferences, you can use their opinions to determine what type or brand of tattoo liners are chosen a majority of the time. They can also steer you clear of companies they've had problems with in the past.
Step5
Browse the various liners available. Most tattoo supply companies sell tattoo liners, shaders and all around machines that can do either. You can find these companies online and in tattoo magazines. Compare cost, shipping fees and times and warranties to determine which company has the best deal to fit your needs.
Step6
Contact tattoo machine builders. Even after looking at numerous liners, you may find that you still can't find one that suits you. This is when you need to consider having one custom built to your specifications. Although these machines will cost more than ready made ones, it can be worth it in the long run.
Step7
Tune the tattoo liner for peak performance. Besides the coils, the biggest difference between a tattoo liner and a tattoo shader is how the machine is set up. If you don't know how to tune the machine yourself, find a reliable source who can either do it for you or teach how to do it for future reference.

Tips & Warnings

  • During setup, the gap for tattoo liner is generally the thickness of a dime.
