Things You'll Need:

  • Owners manual
  • Tape measure

    Order Custom Sails

  1. Step 1

Familiarize yourself with sails by reading the "Encyclopedia of Sails" found on the UK-Halsey website. Read about sail design and how sail design and materials affect the sailing experience.

  2. Step 2

Ask for recommendations for a reputable sailmaker from fellow sailors. Look for sails made locally since sailmakers prefer to take actual measurements of a boat before creating a sail. Search online for sailmakers if you do not find what you want in your area. Obtain quotes from multiple lofts before purchasing new sails.

  3. Step 3

Supply the following information to get a quote for new sails: the exact make, model number and year of your sailboat. Find this information in your owner's manual. Provide a sail plan for custom built sail boats. Inform your sailmaker if you have a standard or tall rig, wishbone or conventional boom and if you have installed a furling system. Provide model numbers and specifications for any modifications you have made to your sailboat.

  4. Step 4

Tell your sailmaker about the conditions of the areas where you sail. The strength and shape of the sail you use depends on your sailing conditions. Decide if your sails are for racing, recreational sailing, off shore cruising or a combination of uses.

  5. Step 5

Discuss types of sailcloth for your sails with your sailmaker. Ask about the price and durability of different types of sailcloth. Get a quote for sails made from the type of sailcloth appropriate to your needs. Compare quotes on sails made from the same type of sailcloth to find the right sailmaker for your boat.

  6. Step 6

Choose a sailmaker and schedule an appointment for your sailmaker to measure your boat. Make your boat available for follow up measurements if necessary. Wait for delivery, install your new sails and enjoy.

  7. Buy Used or Pre-Made Sails

  8. Step 1

Find the exact make and model of your sailboat. Note any special features you have installed and any modifications you have made. Measure your boat for new sails. Compare your actual measurements against information contained in your owner's manual. Adjust the measurements for modifications you have made to your sailboat.

  9. Step 2

Search local lofts for used and packaged sails. Double check the sail measurements against your actual boat measurements. Obtain prices from several sail lofts for new and used sails. Note the rating when comparing the price on used sails. Compare used sails of the same quality.

  10. Step 3

Consider trading in your existing sails for credit on your new purchase. Buy sails that fit your sailing needs. Install your new sails to determine if they fit. It is possible to shorten sails up to 10 percent of their length. Return sails that are a poor fit and try again.

Tips & Warnings
