Many dentists recommend using mouthwash, a rinse you use to clean, whiten and protect teeth, as part of a normal oral health routine along with brushing and flossing. Follow the steps to learn what to look for when buying mouthwash and dental rinses.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to a local drugstore or grocery store and compare the brands and types of mouthwash and dental rinses. You should be able to choose the right one for you by comparing them side by side.

  2. Step 2

Look for a mouthwash with fluoride to strengthen your teeth and help protect them from cavities and plaque build-up. You may end up choosing two types of mouthwash, one with fluoride and one without, as you should only use a fluoride rinse once a day.

  3. Step 3

Choose an anti plaque formula to protect your teeth in addition to regular brushing and flossing. Mouthwashes with anti plaque ingredients keep your teeth free from build-up and help keep your gums healthy.

  4. Step 4

Buy special mouthwashes for specific treatments. You can find a mouthwash to rid bad breath, whiten teeth or remove stains from smoking and coffee drinking.

  5. Step 5

Use a mouthwash that is alcohol free if you want something that won't sting or feel harsh inside your mouth. Also look for those that are sugar free or use natural ingredients such as baking soda.

  6. Step 6

Choose from a variety of flavors such as mint, cinnamon or bubblegum. Your mouthwash doesn't have to taste bad and hurt your mouth to work. Many mouthwashes are very pleasant to use.

  7. Step 7

Use mouthwash after brushing your teeth. Swish or gargle the rinse for 30 seconds. Spit the rinse out. Don't swallow it.
