Step1
Fill up a sparse bed with appealing bedding. Pillows, comforters, sheets and blankets in rich, deep colors can instantly make a bedroom feel cozy. An attractive, comfortable bed also can contribute to a better night's sleep.
Step2
Use curtains or draperies in a bedroom that coordinate with the bedding. The act of closing the curtains or drapes each night can create a feeling of sealing off your own private retreat. Of course, window coverings have the added benefit of blocking out light that might interfere with sleeping.
Step3
Paint the walls in rich, deep tones as well and set them off with the warm glow of bedside table lamps or wall-mounted lighting. Swing-arm lamps are a good option if you like to read in bed.
Step4
Hang pictures of people and places that are important to you in the bedroom. Decorate the room with other personal items that are significant to you as well. Personal items that communicate fond memories can warm up almost any space.
Step5
Add area rugs or wall-to-wall carpeting to the bedroom. Rugs can be effective insulators that literally warm up a room that has hardwood or tile floors. If light-colored, wall-to-wall carpeting is already in the room, consider adding a colorful area rug anyway, since large areas of light colors can make a room feel cold.
