Step 1
Drain all water from your fountain. Once you think that all the water is out, let your pump run for a few seconds. This forces any water left in the house or tubing to push out into the fountain.
-
Step 2
Evaluate your options. If possible, bring your fountain inside for the winter. You can store it in a shed or garage. Your fountain may have tiers that come apart. If you can't disassemble your fountain or it's too big to move, you need to take extra precautions.
-
Step 3
Fill the basin with an absorbing material. The material absorbs any moisture caused by condensation. Burlap sacks, towels or blankets can be used. If your outdoor fountain has layers, you need to fill each layer.
-
Step 4
Cover the fountain. You can buy a fountain cover online from Outdoor Decor or you can use a tarp. You want to wrap the fountain tightly so water won't slip through cracks. You also want to ensure that your cover is secured to the fountain and won't blow off in strong wind.

Step 5
Protect your fountain year round. Outdoor fountains can become clogged or stained by leaves and other debris left in the basin. The pump should be run continually to prevent freezes during the fall and help avoid stagnant water. Use a cleaner, such as bleach, to keep algae from forming.
