Instructions

Check to see if you are allowed to pass. If there are double lines on the road then it is a no passing zone; if there is a broken line then you are allowed to pass. There are often street signs to tell you whether you can pass or not also. Traveling on a multiple lane highway usually means passing is allowed.

Put on your turn signal. Before passing, you should always put on your turn signal. You need to let others know that you are going to change lanes.

    • 3

Watch the traffic. You need to check oncoming traffic and see if you can pass or not. If you are on a highway with multiple lanes passing is usually allowed but you still need to be sure that you will not run into anyone when you pass. Check your rear view mirror, side mirror and over your shoulder to be sure there aren't any cars around you so you can pass safely.

Pass on a two-lane road very carefully. When driving on a two-lane road, passing becomes trickier. You now not only have to watch the traffic behind you but in front of you. When you come to an area where passing is allowed, be sure there isn't any oncoming traffic. Check all mirrors for traffic behind you and then check to see that there isn't traffic coming in the opposite direction, put on your turn signal and pass the car.
