Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand what bioidentical hormones are. Contact The North American Menopause Society to learn what the hormones are made up of. Many bioidentical hormones contain esrone or estrodiol which are weak types of estrogen. Some bioidentical hormones may also have progesterone or testosterone.

  2. Step 2

Undergo a complete physical. Your doctor will also take a medical history and determine if hormone replacement therapy would be beneficial. Some women with a history of certain cancers may be advised not to use bioidentical hormone therapy.

  3. Step 3

Contact the Alternative Medicine Network. The organization provides a list of health care professionals who use bioidentical hormones. A woman can search by state for a physician or naturopathic physician who prescribes bioidentical hormones.

  4. Step 4

Have a hormone panel completed. Your doctor will order a blood or salvia test to determine what your various hormone levels are. Bioidentical hormones are customized. A specific dose will be ordered according to your needs.

  5. Step 5

Locate a compound pharmacy. Since the hormones are tailored made for each woman they are not manufactured in bulk and sold at traditional pharmacies. Ask your prescribing physician where a compound pharmacy is in your area. Contact the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists who can also provide a list of pharmacies.

  6. Step 6

Learn about the side effects from taking the hormones. Some women may experience side effects depending on their particular dosage. Ask your doctor what to do to relieve side effects.
