Sticking to the essentials can save time when you're in a hurry to feed or change baby. Proper packing keeps unnecessary items out of the diaper bag, and can reduce the load you must carry when hiking outdoors.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Powder
  • Diaper cream
  • Baggies
  • Cosmetic or travel bag
  • Antibacterial hand sanitizer
  • First aid kit
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Extra clothes
  • Snacks
  • Small plastic containers
  • Formula
  • Bottles
  1. Step 1

Pack a smaller bag such as a cosmetic bag or small travel case that can fit 3 or 4 diapers. Bring a small wipes case or a resealable baggie that can hold 10 wipes. Include diaper cream, a changing pad or small blanket and antibacterial hand sanitizer. This bag can be easily taken out when you need to change a diaper.

  2. Step 2

Keep items like formula, bottles and burp rags at the top of the diaper bag or in separate side compartments that can be reached without digging through the bag. Pack a small water bottle to rinse hands or quench thirst.

  3. Step 3

Store snacks in small plastic containers with lids or resealable bags. Any formula, juice or other items that must be kept cool should be put in a freezer bag or a separate cooler. Include a small first aid kit of band aids, fever reducers, child pain relievers and antibiotic cream.

  4. Step 4

Pack an extra set of clothing that doesn't take up much room in the bag. Shirt, pants, underwear and socks should be placed in another plastic grocery bag or a resealable bag that can be stored at the bottom of your diaper bag.

  5. Step 5

Store a few plastic shopping bags in the diaper bag. They can be used for dirty diapers if you need to carry them before you find a garbage can. You also can wrap soiled clothing in them.

  6. Step 6

Include sunscreen and insect repellent in an accessible pocket of the diaper bag. Put these on your child before you leave the house, and reapply every few hours when you're outdoors.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you'll be in the sun for long, bring a collapsible umbrella or a small pop-up tent to protect your child from the sun.
  • Check both sunscreen and insect repellent to make sure it is suitable for your child's age.
