Storage units provide an inexpensive way to store your belongings when you don't have enough room to fit them in your living area. Unfortunately, thieves often target storage units. Follow these steps to secure your property.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a facility that limits access to the storage units. The facility should have a fence that surrounds the grounds and a computer controlled electric gate. Get a personal access code so you can visit your unit night and day.

  2. Step 2

Install a security camera. Some facilities provide security cameras that monitor the driveways in front of the unit. If your facility doesn't provide cameras, you can install your own, provided you rent a storage unit with electrical power.

  3. Step 3

Choose a facility with resident managers, who live on the premises and monitor the facility 24 hours per day. Some facilities provide a manager only during daytime hours and rely on other security measures at night.

  4. Step 4

Buy a high security padlock. Padlocks 4 Less sells European designed high-security padlocks. Your padlock should provide maximum cut resistance, be constructed of hardened steel with chrome plating and have a weather tough sliding keyway to keep the lock from jamming due to dirt or grime.
