While it's true that most newborns will begin individual motor development on their own and learn as it comes natural, there are some things that a parent or caregiver can do to help. There are ways and means to encourage a baby's development.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Give a baby "tummy time" to encourage his motor development. At 6 weeks old, place the infant on her tummy on the floor while she's awake. You can place her on a rug or a floor mat. A blanket, quilt or large towel can provide a cushioned surface. Some babies won't like being on their tummies at first. Start with 2 minutes at a time and work up to 10-minute sessions. This tummy time encourages a baby to lift her head and chest.
Step2
Continue the tummy time technique to encourage a baby's motor development. Place one of his favorite toys on the floor just out of his reach. He will eventually try to reach for the toy. As raises himself to reach for the toy, he will gradually start scooting, which leads to crawling.
Step3
Encourage a baby's motor development by using a U-shaped pillow. Place the baby with his arms and chest across the curve of the U. This encourages him to raise himself up and will strengthen his upper body. At around 5 to 6 months of age, you can begin to sit the baby on his bottom with his back to the curve in the pillow. These U-shaped pillows are made of firm material so that a baby's back can be supported to help him learn to sit up and hold himself steady.
Step4
Buy push toys that encourage a baby's motor development. Once a baby stands, a push toy such as a plastic grocery cart in child size can be used to help the baby learn to walk. There are also sturdy "baby walkers" designed specifically to make it easier for a baby to learn to walk.
