The sign of a healthy cat is often its teeth. Now, your cat may be talented, but it's unlikely this pet can brush and floss it's own teeth. You're going to have to lend a hand.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by brushing your cat's teeth. Start with the smallest toothbrush you can find, a child size one will do and introduce it to the cat. You can also use your finger to brush your pet's teeth.

  2. Step 2

Use a toothpaste that is made specifically for animals. You want to be sure that is says "safe to swallow" because your cat will swallow the paste.

  3. Step 3

Gently sweep the toothbrush across your cat's teeth. When you are finished, offer your pet a treat if he cooperated. Cats can be motivated by food rewards.

  4. Step 4

Gradually, each day lengthen the amount of time that you brush his teeth.

  5. Step 5

Offer the cat another prize if he lets you brush his teeth.

  6. Step 6

After successfully brushing the cat's teeth, grab a piece of string and extend it using both hands. Call the cat over and introduce it to him.

  7. Step 7

Encourage the cat to bite the string. While he is biting, move the string back and forth over the cat's teeth. This will probably take several times before the cat realizes that he actually likes this activity and will start signalling for it.

Tips & Warnings
  • The younger you start the cat brushing and flossing the more success you will have.
  • Never use human toothpaste on a cat's teeth.
