How to Scale a Photo With InDesign

Resizing a photo using a desktop publishing program is not as simple as clicking on the photo and dragging the frame. The photo will become distorted. The subjects in the photo will look unnaturally thin or it will cause them to look plump. You can scale a photo with InDesign to make sure the photo remains proportioned.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a picture. Make certain the Constrain Proportions Lock is engaged. It looks like a link icon and is found just to the right of the W and H (width and height) boxes on the tool bar at the top of the page. You can enter measurements other than percentages into the Percentage or Width and Height fields. Just put the appropriate symbol or abbreviation after the value you enter (e.g., in, %, cm).

    • 2

Choose the Center Reference Point, which is found all the way to the left of the tool bar.

    • 3

Type in new percentages in the boxes found to the right of the Constrain Proportions Lock. The frame you drew to place the photo will resize right along with the photo unless you use the Width and Height fields.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use Photoshop to change the size of the photo if you know the exact width and height you want your photo to be. Then update the link to InDesign.

  • If you use the width and height fields, it will scale the frame and not the photo.

Actually, if you hold down the command|option|shift keys and drag a corner, it will automatically resize without having to go to the proportions fields. You can also change the size of the bounding box and then click the "Fit Content Proportionally" icon in the far right of the options menu bar.
