Step 1
Choose a spot at least 200 feet away from your campsite. Pick a place that isn't near a water source. If the garbage comes in contact with a water source, the water could become contaminated.
-
Step 2
Dig a hole at at least 2-feet deep and 1-foot wide. By placing it this deep, the smell is guaranteed not to escape, and there is also enough room for water to drain without collecting in the bottom of the hole.
-
Step 3
Place a window screen over the top of the hole. If this item is not available, use a large garbage bag with holes poked into it. Pour your waste water into the hole. Old food and other products that you choose to throw away will collect on top of this screen. Dispose of the excess food that has collected by placing it in a bag in a garbage can, or by burning it.
-
Step 4
Remove the screen when you are done with the garbage site. Make sure you cover the hole and leave the scene just as looked when you arrive. Never leave evidence of your campsite in the wilderness.
