Whether you are hosting or attending a black tie party it is important to maintain proper etiquette. If you are the host of the party you want to model the behavior that you would expect from your guests during this formal affair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Dress appropriately. If an invitation indicates that a party is black tie then what you will wear has been decided for you. Men should wear a dinner jacket with a black bow tie and women should wear a long floor length evening dress or gown to a black tie party.

  2. Step 2

Extend your hand and introduce yourself to guests that you do not know. Maintain eye contact during an introduction or any conversation at a black tie event. Remove your glove from your right hand before shaking hands if you are wearing gloves.

  3. Step 3

Hold food and drink in your left hand so that your right hand will always be free if you are approached for a handshake.

  4. Step 4

Keep conversation away from controversial topics such as religion, politics and sex.

  5. Step 5

Limit the amount of alcohol you consume. Having more than two glasses of wine throughout the evening might make you feel relaxed, but the last thing you want to do is get drunk at a black tie party. Don't overdo the alcohol.

Tips & Warnings
  • A short cocktail dress may be appropriate for women if the black tie party is being held during the day. This will depend on your social circle. If you are unsure, ask the host in advance.
