If you have a senior dog that has mobility problems, you might need a dog litter box inside the house or outside on a patio or porch so that he can "go" without going down stairs. You can create a comfortable box out with some common items.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Get a four-sided wooden box with a solid bottom large enough for your dog to stand on and turn around on. For most dogs 42 by 42 inches will work well. The box can be longer and narrower instead, as long as it allows space for turning around. Many dogs circle before going to the bathroom. The box should be around ten inches deep.

  2. Step 2

Fill the bottom of the box with cat litter in a layer at least 3-inches deep. Level the cat litter to make an even surface.

  3. Step 3

Cut a piece of window screen to fit inside the box that you made. Lay the screen on top of the cat litter.

  4. Step 4

Lay synthetic sod on top of the screen. Using sod as the top layer might make it easier for you to teach your senior dog what the litter box should be used for, especially if she is used to going to the bathroom on grass.

  5. Step 5

Cover the screen with gravel instead of sod if your dog is used to going to the bathroom on pavement or gravel. Using gravel might also make clean up easier that sod.
