Step 1
Get the appropriate education. Training for computer forensics is expensive, but the demand for technicians is high. There are online courses offered through various online certifications, one such company offering this is Infosec Institute. Always check the qualifications of any alternative educational facility and make sure you will be receiving the qualifications you need.
-
Step 2
Consider an internship while in college. Internships offer the opportunity to make sure you are happy in your chosen area while you learn in hands-on environment, which looks great on your resume for later post-college job searching and gives you the opportunity to network with potential future employers.
-
Step 3
Decide what agency you would like to work in. This could include a large city police lab - small cities and rural communities are not likely to have a computer forensics position - or working in a government agency, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
-
Step 4
Build a strong resume, cover letter and interview tactics. The resume and cover letter will get you in the door, but the interview will get you the job. Always do research on the company or agency you are applying for to show interest and knowledge. Consider where your internship was completed as that will give you greater odds of getting hired on, since the company or agency already knows and trusts you.

on 3/4/2008 One thing to be mentioned. Before you put this down as your major, will you be able to handle it?....I work on one side of this and you will see some of the worst things you can imagine when you break into some of these computers. Choose your career wisely and make sure there is an upside. Try to remember you may be helping more people in the long run.
