The idea for the United Nations (UN) gained shaped when more than 50 countries met at the United Nations Conference on Industrial Organization in San Francisco in 1945. The UN was officially formed on October 24, 1945. Today, the UN is headquartered in New York City, where representatives from numerous nations meet regularly to solve international problems.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Obtain specific information regarding hours of operation at (212) 963-TOUR (8687). The UN is open seven days a week with a few exceptions such as weekends in January and February.

  2. Step 2

Arrive at the UN which is located in Manhattan on First Avenue between 42nd and 48th Streets.

  3. Step 3

Take a tour. English-speaking tour guides offer tours every 30 minutes. Tours in other languages are offered as well; however, you'll need to check for specific tour times. If you're traveling with 12 or more people, then call in advance for a reservation. Remember that tours may vary according to the UN activities taking place on a particular day. Children under age 5 are not allowed on the tour.

  4. Step 4

Enjoy various stops on the tour including the chambers in the Conference Building, art exhibits and the famous General Assembly Hall.

  5. Step 5

Visit the UN Gift Centre and Bookshop. Purchase UN stamps at the postal counter. The UN is the only organization authorized to issue stamps independent of a nation or territory.
