For some homes, the garage is a dumping ground for. Some homeowners cannot park their cars in the garage for all the accumulated belongings. It's a simple task to install overhead storage in a garage. With the mess off the floor, you can find room to park your car again.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Visit your local home store or hardware store to see what types of overhead storage units are available. Choose one that suits your needs.
Step2
Lay out all the pieces of the storage unit. Make sure all the pieces are in the box. Read and follow all assembly directions with your particular storage unit.
Step3
Find a place in the garage to install the overhead storage. Storage racks should be near the wall and should hang so that they don't interfere with the operation of the garage door. Make sure the studs in the rafters can support the weight of an overhead storage unit.
Step4
Mark where you plan to install the overhead storage. You can easily locate the studs in an open, unfinished garage. In a finished garage, use a stud finder.
Step5
Drill four 3/16-inch holes in the center of the studs that correlate with the size of the storage unit you are hanging. Before drilling, use the stud finder to check the location of the holes.
Step6
Assemble the frame of the storage unit. Using the lag bolts or screws that come with the system, attach the storage unit frame to the ceiling. Don't overtighten lag bolts.
Step7
Attach the wire grid to the metal frame. Depending on the type of storage unit, the grids can either snap in place or attach with special connectors provided with the shelving system.
