How to Spot a Clique
A clique is a group of friends that more or less socialize exclusively with each other. Such groups are usually considered negative forces because it excludes so many people. In high school, a clique can cause anguish when a student wishing to join it is ridiculed or denied entry.

1
Look for high school groups who are usually spotted together. If members of the group are rarely seen with anyone outside the group, they are likely part of a clique. This may be because they choose only to associate with each other. It may also be because members of the group share common interests.

2
Notice hostility toward high school students who are not members of their group. One of the hallmarks of the clique is a disdain for nonmembers. Controlling who can join is a source of a clique's power. A clique may form for that purpose alone, or it may be an innocent byproduct of the group's disinterest in other students.

3
Observe the clothing and hairstyles of the group. Clique members often dress similarly and sport the same hairstyles. The uniform look can give the clique members a sense of confidence because their personal style does not stand out, and they are therefore less likely to attract attention and ridicule.

4
Spot kids who have to consult with each other often to make decisions. If a high school student feels he must call friends before buying clothes or choosing a DVD, he is likely a member of a clique.
