The reticle on a rifle scope is also known as the crosshairs. The reticle helps to line up the target that you're viewing through the scope. There are many different types of reticles, but most are a variation on the duplex reticle first introduced by the Leupold Rifle Scope Company.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what type of game you want to hunt with your scope. If you're hunting small game, you need a more open design near the center of the reticle so that you can see your target better.

  2. Step 2

Think about what type of light conditions you shoot in. If you do a lot of hunting at dawn or dusk, opt for an illuminated reticle that shows up well in low-light conditions. But if you do most of your shooting in bright sunlight, the illuminated reticle isn't necessary.

  3. Step 3

Consider a Ballistic Mil Dot reticle if you shoot over varying distances or in high wind conditions. This reticle has graduations on the crosshairs so that you can adjust for varying distances and wind conditions.

  4. Step 4

Test several different reticle types before you purchase one. The main consideration for the reticle style is personal preference. Find out what you like and stick with that. There's no right or wrong choice; it's just a matter of what works best for each individual.
