Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Newspapers
- Large mixing bowl
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp. salt
- Water
- Wooden spoon
- Craft wire, wire hangers or aluminum foil
- Foam paintbrush
- Craft paint, preferable acrylic
- Fine grain sandpaper
- Craft sealant
Step1
Form a base for the papier mache sculpture out of wire or any other material that you like.
Step2
Create the sculpture shape from wire or aluminum foil. Compress the aluminum foil tightly so that moisture can't get stuck in the folds, or it will be difficult to dry. Attach the sculpture shape to the wire base.
Step3
Mix the all-purpose flour, salt and 2 cups of water in a large mixing bowl until the consistency is smooth and looks like glue. Keep a wooden spoon handy. As you work, occasionally stir the mixture to prevent the flour from settling to the bottom of the mixing bowl.
Step4
Tear the newspapers into strips about an inch wide and in varying lengths. Dip the strips into the papier mache mix and use your fingers to remove the excess. Add the strips, one by one, to your sculpture shape. Continue adding strips, working them around and shaping with your fingers until the sculpture looks the way you want.
Step5
Allow your sculpture to dry. Depending on how much papier mache you used, this can take several days.
Step6
Smooth out any rough edges with fine sandpaper when the sculpture is completely dry. Paint it with craft paint or acrylic paint.
Step7
Brush on some craft sealant after the paint dries to protect the sculpture and make it shiny.
