You've planted a new home orchard and you'd like to use a weed control system that's friendly to the environment. The tiller method doesn't require harmful chemicals and it increases beneficial soil composition.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Purchase a tiller specifically designed for weed control. A good option for larger farms is the Weed Badger. It can till any row crops from berries to orchards. You can find them at weedbadger.com.
Step2
Run your tiller often to keep weeds under control. It's easier to till weeds when they're young than when they're firmly established. This also prevents weeds from maturing to the point of bearing more weed seed.
Step3
Utilize a small garden tiller for small spaces. Some models come with detachable blades to make them even more versatile. Try the Remington Electric Landscape Tiller, which has the added benefit of zero emissions.
Step4
Till only 1 or 2-inches deep. This will prevent damage to the roots of the surrounding plants you want to keep.
Step5
Use your tiller only on annual and non-root generated weeds. Weeds such as bindweed and quack grass grow from small pieces of root, so tilling them will spread their growth.
