Whether you are ready to design a house or a garage or draw architectural plans for a high-rise, Computer Aided Design or CAD software can be a huge help. Depending upon your experience level and your needs, there is a CAD software program out there for you.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the extent of your CAD needs. If you are designing a simple floor plan or elevation, a two-dimensional program is sufficient. However, if you need blueprint-quality plans with plumbing and wiring diagrams, choose a more professional program.

  2. Step 2

Factor in the price. Some CAD programs that feature add-on libraries and network with other programs are expensive, but you don't have to pay a lot of money to use a basic CAD program. Google and Sketchup have teamed up to bring you Google Sketchup 6, a free downloadable program that provides everything needed for basic drafting (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Consider an expandable program if you want a wide range of features. AutoCAD, the industry standard, offers a regular and a light version. Other software manufacturers have developed numerous plug-in programs that expand AutoCAD's abilities. Choose from landscape, bridge, decking or other modules (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Try before you buy. Many leading CAD software programs offer a trial version or a demo, allowing you to evaluate the software before you choose.

  5. Step 5

Compare the features of the leading CAD programs at sites like Houseplanz (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Evaluate your CAD skills carefully. No matter which program you choose, be aware of the skill level required to operate it. If you are not familiar with technical drafting terms or Bezier curves, opt for a program with drag-and-drop features.
