Making a compass out of an old CD or DVD could help you find your way while you practice recycling. This compass is easy to use and make. A CD compass is a fun project that can be created by children for a science class project.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Used CD or DVD
  • Small magnet
  • Hot glue and hot glue gun
  • Small washer, equal to the weight of the magnet
  • Small plastic bowl
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Glue the magnet to the top outer edge of the CD with the hot glue gun. The magnetic side of the magnet must face up. Move the magnet around to find a good spot to place it. Depending on the magnet's size, if you glue the magnet too far away from the center of the CD it will tip the CD. If the magnet is too close to the center, the CD does not spin and the compass does not work.

  2. Step 2

Glue a washer directly across from the magnet. The washer acts as a counter balance. It keeps the CD from tipping towards the side of the magnet.

  3. Step 3

Fill the bowl or container with an inch of water.

  4. Step 4

Place the CD with the magnet on top inside of the bowl or plastic case. The CD compass aligns itself to Magnetic North when it gets in the water.
