How to Install a Portable DVD in a Car

No parent wants to hear "Are we there yet?" from the kids in the back seat. A simple solution is to install a portable DVD player. DVD players are lightweight and easy to install. Many of them also play CDs and MP3s so it's an easy matter to keep the young travelers entertained. As the technology for portable DVDs becomes more readily available, the price continues to drop as well.

1. Shop around for the best DVD player you can afford. While there are in-dash DVD players and ceiling mounted units, a portable DVD player generally provides the best option as an add-on to your automobile.
2. Look for a portable DVD player that has the mounting equipment with it. Most car mounted DVD players come with a portable case that includes storage for DVDs.
3. Remove the DVD player from the box. Plug it into an electrical socket to charge the battery. Make sure the DVD player is operational.
4. Read and follow all directions for installation and operation. Be sure to save the instructions.
5. Install the DVD mounting kit to the headrest according to package directions. Make sure to tighten all straps securely. Also check the tightness of straps periodically.
6. Place the DVD player in the case. Attach it properly with the appropriate straps. If the unit came with a car battery adapter, plug it into the car's battery outlet.
7. If more than one person is going to be watching the DVD, purchase additional headsets. A Y-adaptor makes it easy to split the sound signal so two persons can easily enjoy the same DVD.
