Step 1
Find a youth symphony in your area. You can do this by searching online since most symphonies have website to promote concerts and performances.
-
Step 2
Contact your local symphony for audition times and requirements. All symphonies have auditions to test the skill of the new musicians and the returning musicians. There are also specific requirements that will be required for the audition. A prepared piece, playing scales and sight reading are the most common but not the rule for all auditions.
-
Step 3
Prepare your prepared piece for the audition. You want to pick a piece based on your playing skill. This should be a piece that you will be able to prepare by the time of the audition and that is also a challenge for you.
-
Step 4
Practice your scales. Although there is no set rule for scale auditions it is usually better to have the scales memorized since the scale will be picked at random. If you aren't able to do this, take in a copy of all the scales to work from in the audition.
-
Step 5
Practice your sight reading. This is probably the most nerve wracking part of an audition since there is really no way to prepare. To prepare simply pull out pieces for any workbooks that you have and sight read the piece the whole way through without stopping. Make a note of the things that you messed up and try to keep the mistakes in my so that you won't make the same ones in another piece. Sight reading is something that gets easier the more that you do it.
-
Step 6
Audition for the symphony. Once you have prepared, you're audition should go smoothly. Remember to stay calm and focused so that you don't become distracted during the audition.
-
Step 7
Join the youth symphony. If you're accepting into the symphony, there is usual either no fee or a small fee to cover the cost of sheet music. You will be placed in a chair and can start preparing for your first concert.
