Buying exotic flowers for your mother or wife on Mother's Day shows your love and devotion by offering something extraordinary and beautiful. Roses are traditional and easy to find, while exotic flowers take an extra effort to find and deliver.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Pull out the yellow pages or do a local search on your Internet of florist or nurseries who specialize in exotic plants and flowers. If your mother lives out of town, then Internet search is your best option.
Step2
Contact about three florists or nurseries and inquire about exotic flowers for Mother's Day.
Step3
Ask the retailer if they have living or cut flowers. Living exotic flowers last longer and mean more to a mother. However, exotic flowers that have been cut and arranged usually have chemicals that maintain their beauty and effectiveness for quite some time. The selection of cut exotic flowers might be more based on their treatment.
Step4
Choose living or cut flowers. Living exotic flowers must be made into an arrangement in a plastic plant container within a decorative pot. Ask for 3 to 4 plants arranged in the container with a ribbon and card - no less than two - unless a very rare and extraordinary orchid is available, thus expensive.
Step5
Schedule a pick-up or delivery with the retailer. Delivery is extra but worth the hassle if your time is short. If it is being done from out of town, you have no choice but to have the retailer deliver the arrangement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Exotic flowers mean a huge variety of orchids and brilliant colors of anthuriums to the standing birds of paradise, or pick the many brilliant colors of the bromeliad. An arrangement must consist of at least two different types of exotic plants. Start with an orchid and then add bromeliad or anthurium.
  • The secret of picking the perfect orchid is of course it's unique beauty and color, but also the number of buds still available to bloom. Orchid's blooms can last up to two months if they receive proper care by avoiding cold drafts. With Mother's Day in May that shouldn't be too hard.
  • Exotic flowers are found on cacti and succulents as well. You may want to inquire about a unique cactus or succulent with blooms.
  • If you give a living orchid as a Mother's Day present, then also purchase her a class or workshop about the care and handling orchids.
  • Another great gift idea is to give a book about the type of exotic flower bought for your Mother's Day gift.
  • Although exotic flowers are very beautiful and awe-inspiring, make sure you include a care sheet or book because they are temperamental in certain climates and regions.
