How to Get a Root Canal

A root canal, also called endodontic therapy, becomes necessary when the pulp or nerve tissue surrounding the root of the tooth decays. The procedure should only be performed by a dentist who feels that a root canal is the best solution for your oral problem.

1. Know the symptoms for tooth decay. A painful tooth, tenderness or inflammation near a tooth may indicate damage to the nerve tissue. Dental decay can occur without causing signs, so it's good to schedule regular checkups with a dentist.
2. Find a dentist. You can ask for referrals from friends and family who have used dentists in the area. Depending on your insurance, you may need to find a dentist in your insurance company's network. The insurance company can provide you with a list of in network dentists, or you can verify that a dentist is in its network by calling the dentist's office.
3. Have x-rays taken. If you routinely see your dentist, this should be part of the exam on a regular basis. An x-ray shows damage or decay inside the tooth where the pulp is located. Even if you aren't experiencing pain, have x-rays taken as a preventative step.
4. Schedule the root canal. Most often you consult with the dentist so he can identify the areas that need work. Once he determines you need a root canal, schedule a convenient time.
5. Get the root canal. The dentist uses anesthesia to help you relax and numb the area around the tooth. The root canal removes bacteria, nerve tissue, organic debris and toxins causing the decay inside the tooth. Once the tooth is cleaned out, the dentist fills and seals the tooth. Root canal treatment may take one to three visits to remedy the problem.
6. Follow the dentist's instructions and follow up with the dentist according to her recommendation. The dentist may recommend certain oral hygiene practices to prevent further tooth decay and cavities.
