How to Know What to Expect After a Root Canal

1. Expect the tooth to be tender and sore. The discomfort varies from patient to patient, but you'll probably want to have some sort of painkillers on hand to help with the pain. Over-the-counter drugs like Ibuprofen or Advil are good choices, or your dentist might recommend something stronger.

2. Avoid chewing with the tooth until your dentist says it's OK. Root canal procedures are often done over multiple sessions, making any tooth that hasn't been fully repaired vulnerable to cracking and breaking.

3. Keep an eye on the tooth after it's been repaired. Even though it was carefully cleaned and repaired by your dentist, cracks in the enamel or other structural weaknesses can lead to reinfection.

4. Know that the repaired tooth will be capped with a crown. This helps to protect the weakened tooth from damage.

5. Continue to brush and floss regularly after your operation. Proper oral hygiene is very important to maintaining the health of your mouth, and it will help your repaired tooth to heal.

6. Be aware that some root canals fail. For one reason or another, about 5 percent of all procedures don't completely repair the pain and discomfort associated with the preoperational tooth.
