Step 1
Use whatever help you can get to mount properly. Technically, the groom is customarily responsible for assisting the rider into the saddle. Have the groom give you a leg up, allowing you to step on his or her leg or by lifting your foot so you reach the saddle in the proper sitting position.
-
Step 2
Get a mounting block if there is no one available to help you mount the horse. Initially, using the mounting block, you will want to sit in the saddle in the straddling position.
-
Step 3
Swing your right leg around the fixed head of the saddle and find the stirrup with your left foot.
-
Step 4
Lay your right thigh on the saddle directly in front of you.
-
Step 5
Rest your calf behind the horse's shoulder with your knee bent at a 90-degree angle.
-
Step 6
Ignore your tendency to lean forward in the saddle. Instead open the angle of your legs and torso by pushing your thigh into the saddle. Center your body's weight throughout your right thigh when you mount a horse sidesaddle.
-
Step 7
Imagine what any other rider looks like from the side. This is actually the position you should be in. Sitting sidesaddle will perform and look like a normal mount.
