How to Use a Horse Double Bridle

The double bridle (or full bridle) has two bits and four reins. It's a somewhat complicated piece of equipment, but in the soft hands of a talented rider, the double bridle is a useful tool. In the US, it's rarely seen outside of high-level dressage. If you think you're ready, follow these steps to using a double bridle.

Instructions

1. Study a double bridle off the horse. Try to picture the mechanics of it in your mind. Picture where the horse will feel it if you apply pressure to the snaffle rein or the curb rein. When you have a good idea of its workings, study it up close on a horse from the ground.

2. Attach a grippy, braided rein to the snaffle bit and a smooth, narrow rein to the curb bit. This way, you'll be able to distinguish them by feel and won't need to look down.

3. Pick a hold that you feel comfortable with. The most common hold has the snaffle held on the outside of the little finger and the curb between the ring finger and little finger. A variation of this puts the snaffle between the ring and little fingers and the curb between the middle and ring finger. Those with a weak pinkie may prefer the latter option.

4. Maintain steady pressure on the snaffle rein and use it as an aid for lateral flexion.

5. Keep soft contact with the curb, and use it to aid collection and lower the poll.

Tips & Warnings

• Switch the reins in Step 3 if you are trying to "ride on the curb," so that the curb rein is on the outside fingers and the snaffle between the inner fingers.

• Most riders rely mostly on the snaffle aid when riding with a double bridle and for good reason--misuse of the curb can hurt the mouth and sour the horse. Do note, however, that complete loss of contact of the curb is considered a fault in dressage.

• You must be able to collect your horse with your seat and other aids before even thinking about introducing the double bridle.
