The Great Balloon Race is held each April in Louisville, Kentucky. The race follows the "Hare and Hound" race format. One balloon is the hare and drifts along wherever the wind takes it. The hare then lets down and forms a fabric X. The hounds race to the spot and drops Kentucky bluegrass on the X. The closest balloon to the X wins.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Travel to the Kentucky Exposition Center (KFEC). It is located at 937 Phillips Lane, Louisville, KY 40209. The Great Balloon Race is one of five events held during Kentucky Derby season.
Step2
Arrive early. The balloon race begins at 7 a.m. Premium parking is gone even earlier. Come early and park early to get to the best spot. Enter the field through South Wing A. Follow the signs to the event or ask an event coordinator for help if you get lost.
Step3
Be ready for the weather by dressing for the occasion. Kentucky is warm during the month of April. The weather is usually pleasant and the balloons only take off if the weather is right. Only five of the last 30 races has the race been canceled due to weather. Check the Weather Channel or online for more information. Type in the zip code 40209 for accurate weather information.
Step4
Wear your Pegasus Pin. Parking will cost about $5 at the KFEC parking lot and admission is free if you are wearing your pin. Call 502-584-FEST to buy your pin. Or, buy your Pegasus Pin at the event entrance.
