Using a body scrub is an excellent way to exfoliate dead skin, unclog pores and allow skin to absorb moisture. To achieve optimum results with a body scrub, buy a product specially suited for your skin type and the areas of the body on which you intend to use it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase an herbal scrub, containing ground apricot or peach pits, seeds or nuts, to exfoliate areas where the skin is thick, like the heels and elbows. These scrubs are rich in vitamin A, vital for healthy skin. Nut oils, like almond, hazelnut and sunflower, are particularly healing for dry skin. Avoid using these scrubs on areas of sensitive skin, as the exfoliating particles tend to have jagged edges.

  2. Step 2

Buy a mineral-based scrub, such as those containing clay, pumice or sand, for deep cleansing. Sea salt scrubs are especially popular and effective. The marine extracts invigorate the skin and have a draining affect on the tissue, withdrawing toxins as they nourish and soften skin.

  3. Step 3

Get a sugar scrub for use on the face. The granules are smaller and smoother than sea salt scrubs. Sugar scrubs also have the benefit of a naturally occurring glycolic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid that revives skin and helps it achieve a more youthful appearance.

  4. Step 4

Select an oatmeal scrub for areas of the body that need special soothing. Oatmeal is particularly gentle and noted for its moisturizing properties and its ability to reduce inflammation.

  5. Step 5

Choose a chemical exfoliator if you have especially sensitive skin. These products use enzymes, retinols or alpha and beta hydroxy acids to lightly exfoliate dead skin cells.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't use loofahs to exfoliate blemishes or skin injuries since loofahs often hang in the shower without being cleaned and are, thus, laden with bacteria. Use a clean washcloth and body scrub instead.
  • Exfoliate gently. Scrubbing too roughly may damage the skin.
