Step 1
Decide why you are coloring your hair and how long you want it to last. With so many different boxes of dye to choose from, it is important to know what you want the end result to be. If you want to cover some gray, look for dyes designed especially for that purpose. Hair dyes also come in temporary and permanent colors, so figure out how long you want the change to last.
-
Step 2
Use the color guide on the box. Most boxes of hair dye will give you a color guide that shoes how drastic the change will be depending upon your natural hair color. This will give you some idea of the brightness created with that particular dye.
-
Step 3
Be careful if your hair has already been dyed or highlighted. Hair that has been previously dyed will take in the color differently than hair that has not been dyed. It will be brighter and more concentrated in these areas.
-
Step 4
Read all of the directions on the box. Make sure that you can complete the coloring treatment at home with the supplies that you have. Purchase any extra items that you may need to dye you hair and decide if it is a procedure you can complete by yourself, or if you will want to have some help from a friend or family member.
-
Step 5
Know that hair dye in not foolproof. At home kits are designed to work well for amateur hair colorists, but there is no guarantee that the end result will be as perfect as the model on the box. If you have any doubts, talk to a hair stylist first.
