Microscopes are diagnostic and investigative tools used most often in classrooms and laboratories. It is easy to buy a microscope, as more and more companies are offering reasonably prices ones that are good quality. The trick is buying the one that's right for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Make sure that the microscope you buy is solid and sturdy. It should not be made of plastic but a metal alloy.
Step2
Choose between a microscope that's lit with a bulb that's tungsten, fluorescent or halogen. These microscopes are cheaper than those lit with a fluorescent bulb. However, a fluorescent bulb does have better quality of light, and also produces less heat than the other bulbs.
Step3
Get a beginner microscope for a child. The controls are larger and the magnification is less. Most beginner scopes have one eyepiece, and a mirror that creates the illumination to view the specimen.
Step4
Go with a stereo microscope if you wish to see specimens in 3-D. The stereo microscope has 2 eye pieces that allows 2 paths of light. They have high depth perception, but the magnification and resolution is low. These scopes are great for performing dissections or viewing insects or fossils. Choose a stereo microscope that can zoom and has a built-in light source.
Step5
Select a compound microscope if you wish to see microscopic specimens such as cells or microscopic life forms. These microscopes can either have 1 or 2 eye pieces. The depth perception is low, but the magnification and resolution is very high.
