You need to outfit your hockey goalie for the pee wee hockey team with the latest hockey gear, and his ensemble wouldn't be compete without a goalie stick. A hockey goalie stick is always a bit larger than a team member's stick so the goalie can block all those slap shots. Here's how to buy a hockey goalie stick so your hockey all-star can make the most of every block.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your league requirements. They are usually particular about such things as the size and length of hockey goalie stick paddles and the width of goalie leg pads. Check with the league's officials for the type and size goalie hockey stick they require.

  2. Step 2

Take a trip to the local sporting goods store. Ask to see the goalie sticks, and be sure you have your child and his skates with you. The goalie stick blades are generally 3 inches wide and can be as long as 15.5 inches.

  3. Step 3

Locate a stick that's the proper length for you. A stick that's too short or too long is difficult to maneuver. Put the stick's "toe" on the ground and see that the other end is within an inch of your child's mouth. Be sure that you child is standing in his skates to make the measurement.

  4. Step 4

Remember that a longer stick shaft can always be cut down. If the hockey goalie stick is too short, however, it cannot be made longer.

  5. Step 5

Consider buying a spare at the same time. Hockey goalie sticks break occasionally and having a spare stick that's the correct size available will keep the game going.
