How to Size an Ice Hockey Stick

You need to buy a hockey stick for your little ice hockey pee wee pro. Sizing for an ice hockey stick might seem like a simple thing, but if you don't do it properly, your all-star will have trouble making his slap shot into the goal. Here's how to properly size your little one's ice hockey stick so he can really slap one into the goal.

Instructions

    • 1

Get your son or daughter's gear. They'll need to be wearing their ice hockey skates when you're sizing their hockey stick, so be sure to throw the skates in the car before you head out to the store with your child. You may also want them to wear the socks they would normally wear during the game.

    • 2

Lace them up. When you get to the sporting goods store's ice hockey stick display, have your son or daughter put on their skates and lace them up.

    • 3

Put the "toe" of the potential stick purchase on the ground by your child's feet. This is the tip of the blade part of the stick.

    • 4

Make sure the top of the shaft of the stick comes between the tip of their nose and their chin. Having the stick fall between the tip of their nose and chin enables them to maneuver the stick most easily on the ice.

    • 5

Verify that you have the correct stick size. It is very difficult to use an under or over-sized ice hockey stick. Sizing is very important, so a properly sized stick makes for the best hockey practice and play.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have an especially small player, know that you can have hockey sticks cut to fit properly as well.

DavidG's quick to criticize but offers little else. Here's what you do. No skates needed; stand straight; tip of the blade between your feet on the ground; put shaft to face and mark at the nose; cut there! When skates are on, the stick will be chin height. Shorter is better for stickhandling. Defensemen may like their sticks a bit longer.

This is not good advice. you do not need your skates on. All people are different and sticks are not created equally. This person "sounds" like they have never played hockey. the only time "toe" in mentioned is when people talk about the great Toe Blake.
