How to Get a Misconduct Penalty in Ice Hockey

Of all the penalties that can be given during an ice hockey game, a misconduct penalty is the only one that does not reflect the behavior of one player toward another. Instead, a misconduct penalty is specifically given to a player who accosts an official. Here's how you might get a misconduct penalty.

1. Verbally abuse or otherwise show disrespect to an official, and you will be given a misconduct penalty. Cursing at the referees or getting into an official's face is enough to get called on this penalty.
2. Get a misconduct penalty along with another penalty. Sometimes officials will call misconduct penalties on players who kick, slash or commit another penalty with the intent to harm the other player. In these cases, misconduct penalties accompany the minor penalty. Or a misconduct penalty might replace the minor penalty.
3. Get ready for a long wait. A misconduct penalty will lead to the longest stint in the penalty box. Unlike minor penalties that last about 2 minutes and major penalties that last 4 minutes, misconduct penalties require the offending player to sit in the penalty box for 10 minutes.
4. Keep your team at full strength. Unless your misconduct penalty accompanies another penalty, your team does not have to play short-handed. They can immediately replace you during your 10-minute penalty.

• Misconduct penalties should be the easiest to avoid. Just keep your thoughts and emotions centered on the game, and don't worry yourself about the officials. The less you think about them, the less likely you'll be tempted to make a misconduct penalty.
